"Who are you guys anyway?"

(continued from the home page) Farm planning started in early summer of 2008 when Karen began "guerrilla gardening" a plot of dirt 2 feet by 10 feet between the concrete of our former Chicago condo building and the church next door. During that first summer she organically produced more peppers, tomatoes, basil and mint than we could eat. It encouraged us to give much of it away to friends and neighbors and forced us to learn how to preserve the bounty!

Shortly after the 2008 mid-summer harvest we immediately began looking for land to farm. We knew that farming was our future. First we looked in Central Kentucky in and around Lexington (near Jody's family). We loved the beautiful land plots, however, we didn't see too much being grown - except tobacco. So we decided to start looking in southwestern Michigan (near Karen's family). And that's where our search ended - South Haven, MI.

karen The Boss - Karen Warner, CEO, CFO, Head Farmer
Hailing from the great State of Michigan, Karen has a bachelors degree from Washington University in St. Louis. And straying far from her undergraduate degree she has found an inner passion for changing the world. That passion has manifest itself in the form of Big Head Farm - it's her small contribution to making the world a better place.

jody The Muscle - Jody Warner, COO, CIO, Head Farmer
Jody is an 25+ year, award-winning photographer with a bachelor's degree from Eastern Kentucky University. At the farm he is the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Information Officer and Head Farmer. He acts as Mr. Fixit, web site manager and equipment locator. He keeps the farm operational.

mikeThe Dog - Mike, CD (Chief Dog)
Yes, it may seem strange for a farm site to list dogs as an integral part of the operation. However, Mike is the main wiggly thing on the farm - the one that licks us when we're around. Fear not, for Mike is a Boxer-mix afraid of his own shadow. He's a rescue from the Chicago Anti-Cruelty Society that came into Jody's life in July of 2004.

sadieThe Other Dog - Sadie, ACD (Assistant Chief Dog)
Sadie (a full Boxer) came to us in April, 2009 through Boxer Haven Rescue. We knew that Mike needed a buddy and we figured that the best way to accomplish that was to get him a sister. When you see Mike and Sadie together, you'll think they're related - they're not! She's our hopping, spinning bundle of happiness!

mikeThe Tractor - (no name yet)
Our tractor is a 1950 International/Farmall "C". We purchased it during the early winter of 2011 and immediately had to repair it. We cleaned it's valves, changed the oil, new radiator fluid, new hydraulic fluid and converted it from 6 volt positive ground to 12 volt negative ground. We also had a 3-point hitch installed so we can use modern implements.

As we expand the farm and get into more business we will add additional staff as needed. We also plan to add, at least, one more dog!

We want to help you, but...

From time to time people have approached one of us and asked how they could help our little farm without actually buying something from us. They wanted to help the local food movement, an independant grower or they just wanted to do something "for the greater good of mankind".

If the paragraph above describes you, there are two ways you can help - come to our farm and physically help us, or, donate money to us that will go directly in to the production of naturally grown vegetables.

If you'd like to physically help, contact Karen. She can help you get to the farm and bring you up to speed on what we actually do here - we dig, rake, weed, mow, plant, trim, lift, clean, fix, walk, run, cultivate, harvest...

If you're a person that would rather not get dirty, but still want to help, we've got a way to accomplish that.

You can donate any amount you'd like through PayPal and we never see your personal information.

If you decide to donate to our farm, thank you. You will never know how much we appreciate your contribution. If you'd like, contact us and ask how we would use the money - we'll gladly share that information. Thank you!
